The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
INTASC Standard #1 Interpretation:
As a teacher I need to understand how to develop lessons that recognize and address the way students learn and grow. I will need to address the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas of development.
Reflection on the Standard:
The following artifacts demonstrate my understanding of INTASC standard #1: learner development and how it may contribute to my effective teaching in the future. The assignments have allowed me to engage in a professional learning experience through which I have enhanced my knowledge of adolescent development. The first artifact is a 1st grade lesson plan in the content area of art; the lesson plan was developed to be as inclusive as possible with modifications for Special education, and english language learner needs. The lesson not only challenges learners in the art elements, but also covers music, and art history. The second artifact is an online multimedia tool; the glogster poster creates a digital learning environment which increases digital literacy in the classroom. With the use of this tool I will be able to reach students by incorporting the three Universal Design principles of engagement, representation, and expression.
